In Tong Wenmin’s performances each encounter between the body and the natural world creates a portal. Sometimes it resets the senses, opening up new ways of perceiving. Sometimes, it recalls forgotten dreams or memories. Sometimes, it offers a glimpse of another life. Towards Solace invites you to join this journey as a companion, sharing a collective act of wandering. The performance takes shape as it unfolds, gradually attuning our senses to primal living forces. We do not move through the portal to escape from constructed realities, but to return to ourselves within it together.
Based in Chongqing, a ‘mountain city’ not dissimilar to Hong Kong, Tong has long examined the entanglement of nature and what is man-made. High-rises built along steep hillsides, interlocking structures and passageways, and overlapping hybrid materials disorient and shape the inhabitants who navigate them. Grinding density and restless pace of metropolitan life, attributing to the chaotic drifting states of inner unrest in modern living, serve as the point of departure for Towards Solace. Here, the body becomes a medium of channeling the planetary into inner worlds, carving out a time and place that runs parallel to the city.
The work can be seen as an allegory, a ritual of seeking, with each person unfolds their own. Mist and a scaffold, creeping with plant life, encapsulate an imagined landscape. Individuals gather here in solitude; utterances drawn from deep within release signals to one another. As they awaken, reaching their anchors and voicing in unison, their bodies merge with one another and with the structure that holds them—a shrine of reconciliation, interconnectedness, and searching. The end of the performance does not represent an end to the ritual; it is an invitation to ripple onwards. Solace, then, is perhaps not the destination, but the process of living through the search itself.
