Para Site is delighted to present Don’t come so fast, darling, the first solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist
at Art Basel in Hong Kong 2019. The exhibition, curated by , presents a selection of Chan’s video, installation, photographic, and performance works from 2017 onwards, including newly commissioned pieces as well as never before shown earlier works. Reflecting on recent personal experiences, and pointing to the absurdity and paradoxes hidden within routine, Chan playfully juxtaposes seemingly unrelated scenarios in everyday life. These include the cycle of desire and tedium of living in a modern metropolis like Hong Kong, the physical and emotional tension in art-making, as well as the intermingled sensations of pleasure and obscenity in love-making. Recreating the atmosphere of a toilet inside the exhibition space, capturing the remnants of abandoned Hong Kong hourly hotel rooms, conveying the touch of a stranger at a massage parlour, and the subtle wrestle between passerby and flyer vendor, Chan’s works in this exhibition elusively stir up a romance between the private and the public, instilling an unexpected intimacy.
