Talk by Daniela Ortiz

Presenting Maids Room, Golden Heights Estate artist Daniela Ortiz speaks about her research into the spatial ratio in houses that belong to the upper class in Lima, Peru. Her study looks at the arquitectura de servicio (service architecture), the space given to live–in domestic workers. Using plans that she gathered from 60 houses built between 1930 and 2012, Ortiz presents a comparative analysis on the spatial allocation of the domestic worker’s bedroom against that of other rooms within the house and the placement of the bedroom within the entire domestic space. Daniela Ortiz (b. 1985, Peru) is an artist who lives and works in Barcelona, Spain. Her work aims to create the spaces of tension for exploring the conceptions of race, class, nationality and gender, in order to analyse social behavior as a structure based on inclusion and exclusion. Recently, a number of investigations and projects that she developed are revolving around migration. Past projects and exhibitions include ARCO 2013, Madrid; N.N. 15.518, La Capella, Barcelona and White Africa, L’Aparador, Museo Abelló, Mollet del Vallès.
