Researcher-in-Residence: Nikolay Smirnov

Nikolay Smirnov (born in 1982) works as an artist, a geographer, a curator and a researcher regarding theory-fiction on spatial practices and representations of space and place in art, science, museum practices and everyday life. His practice is aimed at analysis and implementation of complex narratives in the form of text, exhibition dispositive and film. He studied at the Geography Department of Moscow State University and Rodchenko Art School (Moscow). He has been a participant in a number of scientific and art conferences including Navigation Beyond Vision Curator of the projects Metageography (together with Dmitry Zamyatin and Kirill Svetlyakov) and Permafrost (Arctic Biennale, Yakutsk, 2016). He was also the nominee for the Innovation Award (2016 and 2019, curatorial project Metageography, together with Kirill Svetlyakov), as well as the author of research texts published in: e-flux journal, Xudozhestvennyi Zhurnal (art magazine, Moscow), CEM (Center of Experimental Museology, V.A.C. Foundation) and others. He participated in the main projects of the 5th Ural Industrial Biennial (2019, curator Xiaoyu Weng)  and The 2nd Riga Biennial (2020, curator Rebecca Lamarche-Vadel).
