Para Site Fundraising Auction 2011

Para Site Art Space Fundraising Auction to great success on 9 November 2011.

Led by Cosmin Costinas, the newly appointed Executive Director and Curator, the event raised over HK$2.7 million, a vital first step towards supporting the organisation’s next phase of development. Despite the rain, almost 180 guests participated in the event at the canteen of the new Lane Crawford department store headquarters in Wong Chuk Hang. It was a night of art, friends and support for the independent arts organisation. The evening culminated in an exciting auction that saw all 37 items sold, with a strong show of support from arts patrons in the room, through absentee bids and bidding over the phone. Top lots included a neon work by Tracey Emin and a porcelain watermelon by Ai Weiwei, donated by the artist. Other highlights of the auction include: non-ultra Joy by Hong Kong’s Lee Kit with the artist in the room witnessing his work fetch more than double its upper estimate; a heated bidding war for the work of Mexican artist Carlos Amorales; and the competition for South by Hong Kong’s representative to the 2011 Venice Biennial, Frog King who was present during the auction in full regalia.

“This was a milestone evening for Para/Site. Our friends’ generosity will help fulfill our dream of bringing Para/Site to the international art arena,” said William Lim, co-chair of Para Site.

“We are thrilled that nearly two hundred members of the regional arts community – both professionals and patrons – came together to contribute to the tremendous success of the evening. Support from such a varied group of cultural stakeholders will go a long way in ensuring the future of Para Site as a premier, non-commercial art space in Hong Kong, as it enters a pivotal stage of its 15-year history,” said Para Site co-chair Yana Peel.
