Para Site announces the departure of Billy Tang as Executive Director and Curator after concluding an appointed three-year tenure. During his term of office, Tang led an exhibition programme that emphasised emerging and mid-career artists, and premiered the practices of several international artists in Hong Kong by achieving their first institutional solo exhibitions in the city. Highlights from recent years included ‘Art Labor: Cloud Chamber’ (2024); ‘Aki Sasamoto: Sounding Lines’ (2024); as well as ‘Enzo Camacho & Ami Lien: Offerings for Escalante’ (2023). The programme championed underrepresented voices in Asian contemporary art, particularly artists whose practices took on unconventional approaches, reinforcing Para Site’s role as a vital platform for artistic experimentation.
Alan Lo, Chair of the Board, shared: ‘Billy’s tenure has been marked by bold curatorial choices and a commitment to artists. His exhibitions challenged conventions and ignited vital conversations, leaving a lasting imprint on Para Site and Hong Kong’s cultural landscape. We extend our deepest thanks for his contributions. Today, Para Site remains committed to its mission of building a critical, artist-centric programme that emphasises contemporary artistic discourse from Asia, placing it in dialogue with international developments. Looking ahead, we will continue with our efforts to uplift the voices of emerging talents from the region, and look forward to announcing more rigorous exhibitions, residencies, and other initiatives in the following months.’
Billy Tang reflected: ‘It has been a tremendous honour to lead this agenda-setting institution. Together with our team, we devoted sustained effort to reimagining art’s generative capacity—expanding audiences far beyond individual projects. Through collaboration, our work continues creating ripples across extraordinary distances: from Vietnam’s Central Highlands to Hong Kong’s outlying islands; from grassroots spaces to museums around the world. At each step, we have opened new pathways for the organisation to keep redefining ideas for art to make new connections. I embrace Para Site’s continuous evolution with renewed anticipation. We have consistently responded to our region’s most pressing challenges while building crucial momentum, cultivating fertile ground to nurture and amplify the defining voices of each generation.’
Current Deputy Director Junni Chen will step into the role of Interim Director, ensuring continuity during this transition. Bringing a commitment to Para Site’s mission for centring artistic voices in contemporary art from the region, Chen will oversee the programmatic and operational aspects of the organisation before the Board undertakes a formal search for the position.
