The project title, Materia Prima (first material), is drawn from an ancient Chinese painting principle “from material (nature) to shape” that sees materiality as a significant factor in the formation of a picture. In an artist-in-residence exchange project between Australia and Hong Kong, this project started with three Hong Kong artists going to Melbourne in August 1999, producing work on site and conducting workshops. In its second phase, three Australian artists came over to Hong Kong and produced works in response to Chinese and Hong Kong culture.
