Para Site presents ‘Questscape’, a solo exhibition of Yeung Siu Fong at Art Basel Hong Kong. The presentation marks Para Site’s long-standing commitment at the fair to support and promote new directions pursued by emerging or underrepresented artists based in Hong Kong.
Throughout her practice that traverses paintings, installation, and performance, Yeung interrogates the limits of the human body as well as its connection to the subconscious. ‘Questscape’ draws inspiration from Yeung’s ongoing interest in live performance, where she regards her own body as a medium to embark on a quest for expressive possibilities, and as an extended scenery of the mind. The exhibition features a large-scale, commissioned installation and a series of recent paintings, in an experimental display that traces the physical impermanence and complexity of the body in order to evoke emotional introspective responses in the viewer.
The series of mixed media paintings turns the audience’s gaze inward. Resembling MRI scans at first glance, and with rendered details that evoke the spine and bodily cavities, the meticulous paintings confront viewers with the often-invisible, internal, albeit undoubtedly physical, aspects of their existence. Rather than focusing on the relationship between the body and its environment, these paintings delve into the inner workings of the intuitive self and challenge our understanding beyond scientific objectivity.
A newly commissioned installation dominates the exhibition booth with an entangled structure, inviting the audience to enter into the ‘heart’ of the exhibition. Using projected imagery and sound, the artist looks to create an experience that calls into question the dichotomy between the exterior and interior space of our existence, while also challenging the reducibility of our conscious life.
