Para Site and frieze Magazine are proud to present a panel discussion featuring artist and district councillor Clara Cheung, curator and district councillor Susi Law, Hong Kong Artist Union spokesperson KY Wong, and Hera Chan.
An extension of Chan’s text ‘A Rehearsal for Freedom in Hong Kong’ featured in the latest issue of frieze, this panel will focus on the intersection of contemporary art and social responsibility. Cheung and Law, artists and now district councillors, were elected last November in a landslide victory for pro-democracy groups in Hong Kong, marking a migration of many artists to more direct forms of political engagement. Wong’s experience in union organising speaks to a newer movement toward strengthening the power of unions across disciplines beginning in January. The divide between pro-establishment and pro-democracy factions—particularly at home—remains strong, whereas distinctions between art and politics continue to break down. In light of the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak, our panelists will discuss what political organising looks like under social isolation and how the long-term economic effects of the outbreak will transform production models in contemporary art.
