A new residency for early‑career artists offers an opportunity to connect local artists with the international artistic ecosystems.
Para Site is pleased to announce Liao Jiaming (b. 1992, Guangdong) has been selected as the inaugural artist for its new International Residency Programme, organised in partnership with Triangle Network. Launching in 2026, the programme begins with HANGAR (Lisbon) as its first partner organisation.
Connecting Hong Kong-based Artists to Global Narratives
Launched as part of Para Site’s 30th‑anniversary programmes, this residency is in line with Para Site’s mission to connect Hong Kong’s local ecosystem with the global artistic landscape, expanding international opportunities for Hong Kong‑based early‑career artists. Envisioned as an open platform for genuine exchange, the programme will rotate to different partner destinations each year through Triangle Network’s global reach. In 2026, the inaugural residency takes place at HANGAR, based in Portugal. The two-month residency will connect the selected artist with Lisbon’s contemporary art scene. Whilst allowing the artist to utilise Hangar’s on-site facilities for art-making—including a painting room, dark room, and music studio— the residency is also devised with dialogue in mind, and will encompass collaborative activities, studio visits, and public programmes.
A Partnership Rooted in Shared Values
As an Artistic Research Centre located in Lisbon, HANGAR shares a similar history with Para Site as an independent space founded by artists and curators, with a deep commitment to artistic research. It is a place for experimentation, offering shared working studio and living accommodation, and facilitating exchanges with residents from diverse geographical and cultural backgrounds. The residency is also part of Triangle Network’s global reach, connecting artists across continents through residencies, dialogue, and innovation.
Additionally, Lisbon shares an interesting synergy with areas that neighbour Hong Kong, making it a compelling site from which to research shared colonial histories, while also familiarising the participant with a growing, vibrant cultural ecosystem rooted in Europe.
Looking ahead, the residency represents a long‑term commitment by Para Site and Triangle Network to expand cultural exchange opportunities for early‑career artists based in Hong Kong.
About the Artist
Liao Jiaming works across photography, video, installation, and performance. His research interrogates the entanglement of technology, ideology, and embodied subjectivity within diasporic and networked contexts. Drawing on his experience as a queer person navigating mainland China, Hong Kong, and digital space, his practice questions normative constructions of gender, productivity, and collective identity. He is currently researching digital avatars and the history of radio calisthenics in East Asia, extending his inquiry into the technological modulation of collective bodies.
