Artist-in-Residence: Jao Chia-En

Jao Chia-En (b. 1976, Taiwan) is an artist based in Taipei. He graduated from the Taipei National University of the Arts in 2000 before moving to Paris, where he studied at the École Nationale Supérieur des Beaux-Arts and earned Dipôme National Supérieur d’Arts Plastiques in 2004. He then moved to London and completed his MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, graduating in 2007.

Chia-En approaches contemporary art practice as a set of experiments that deal with the ideas of identity, borders, shared experience and the power relationship between different aesthetic and political regimes. Past exhibitions include the 9th Shanghai Biennial in 2012, REM Sleep at TheCube, Taipei in 2011 and Taipei Biennial in 2010.

As part of the Hong Kong’s migrant domestic worker project, Jao looked at the ecology of Hong Kong migrant workers through language and dreams.
