Open Call | Workshops for Emerging Arts Professionals 2019 – Scholarships offered!

Applications Due: 19 May, 2019

Workshop Dates: 8-16 October, 2019

Para Site is pleased to announce the 2019 Workshops for Emerging Curators, alongside Para Site’s annual International Conference which will take place on 10-12 October, 2019.

In its fifth successive edition, we will work with a group of emerging curators, writers, critics, researchers, and other arts professionals from Hong Kong and abroad, through a series of closed-door workshops, lectures, and site-visits. This 9-day intensive programme is designed to provide learning and thinking opportunities, mediated by reputed speakers from Para Site’s International Conference as well as by art practitioners from across Hong Kong’s diverse institutional landscape. The programme provides a laboratory for experimentation, posing fundamental questions and ideas that challenge various models of curatorial practice. It will also offer opportunities for networking and enhance the development of systems intending to nurture the participants’ careers.

Para Site’s International Conference this year will be organised in dialogue with the “Spinning Triangles” project. Initiated by SAVVY Contemporary on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Bauhaus, the project seeks to challenge and act against the inherent, neocolonial power structures in design practices, theory, and teaching. Starting from the reality of Bauhaus as a school of design and recognising it not only as a solution, but also as a problem, “Spinning Triangles” aims to reverse and reshape it and to propose a school of design that may well become an “un-school.” This collaboration, triangulating the geographies of Dessau/Berlin, Kinshasa, and Hong Kong, is currently in the process of establishing such a connected and growing platform for unlearning, with a conference and series of workshops that just concluded at the School of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, including amongst its faculty Para Site’s invited collaborators. Para Site International Conference will further invite leading theorists, academics, critics, writers and producers from around the world, including faculty and workshop participants from Kinshasa, to engage and gain from each other’s research, and share with Hong Kong’s audience their own critical perspectives.

Para Site will offer a limited number of scholarships to support the participation of outstanding young professionals.
