Since 2019, River Lin’s My Body is… series has staged takeovers at museums, a library, and a university through live encounters. Across geographies, diverse groups of individuals have disrupted and embodied these institutions through their queer identities, personal histories, knowledge, and lived experiences. The occupied spaces came alive – breathing, dancing, conversing, advocating – opening up multiple interpretations and perspectives. Carrying this spirit of activation, My Body is a Para Site is a series of nomadic interventions that drifts and dislocates Para Site throughout its home city of Hong Kong. Para Site becomes present wherever the artist stands, wherever we gather, and wherever new relationships form.
Mapped across the city over the course of a week, My Body is a Para Site places familiar acts in unexpected settings. Behind the glass facade of a shopfront, the artist invites visitors to spend time with him individually, crossing the boundary between public and private encounters. Along popular routes, Lin traverses the city carrying an assortment of ordinary objects, hosting a group run that blends movement with a playful contemplation on the baggage we carry. At the communal spaces of a hotel, the artist rests and weighs himself, exposing private rituals of the body to fellow travellers and guests. As the week builds towards its finale, the artist leads audiences back to the building where Para Site currently resides, enacting a sequence of housekeeping routines to conclude this week-long mobile diary.
At each encounter and location, everyday acts take on a strangeness that creates glitches in our normative way of reading and navigating our surroundings. These invite us – as spectators and participants – to pause, observe differently, and reframe the spaces that we share. Moving from within institutions to alongside public infrastructure, Lin expands the ‘para’ quality of Para Site. Here, it is the city, rather than the institution, that becomes the site.
