Florence Lam reimagines Michele Chu’s space as a cocoon—both incubator and sanctuary—where she spends the night with 26 bean bags, each marking a year of her life until an abortion reshaped her existence. The sealed room is observable only through barriers or a live camera feed overlaid with ultrasound scans of her womb during menstruation, intertwining the flow of time and cycles of bodily renewal. Through this durational performance, Lam reveals a host-guest dynamic from within, inhabiting her own reproductive organ as she rests, crafts, and signals.
Upon her departure, the room becomes a vacant cocoon of an invisible metamorphosis, paving the way for Ocean Birth, Lam’s next work set on the coast, where the shift from the confined to the boundless opens new terrain for her ongoing exploration of fertility.
