Simon Soon is a dilettante interested in 20th century art and visual culture of Asia. He has completed a PhD at the University of Sydney under an Australian Postgraduate Award scholarship where he wrote a thesis on left-leaning political art movements in Indonesia, Malaya, the Philippines and Thailand between the 1950’s and 1970’s. He is co-editor of Narratives of Malaysian Art Vol. 4. He is also a member of the editorial collective of SOUTHEAST OF NOW: Directions on Contemporary and Modern Art, a new refereed journal published in 2016. For this residency, he is interested to explore shifting concepts of illumination in relation to visual poetics of ‘night’.
